Henry County Schools awarded the first construction contract out of education SPLOST VI earlier this week. The board of education approved the classroom addition at Dutchtown High School during their October 11 meeting.

Voters approved education SPLOST VI in March 2021. The program will build six classroom additions at middle & high schools, two new elementary schools and a new STEM high school. Other projects include the following: 125 new school buses, a second bus garage, an expansion of the main district office and technology upgrades.

Dutchtown High School

As of March 2021, Dutchtown High had a student enrollment of 1,713 students. DHS is the largest school in the district by student count. The new addition supports forecast growth in the school’s attendance zone.

The addition will add sixteen new classrooms. This includes fourteen regular classrooms and two science labs. Construction will also build associated workrooms, offices and restrooms. Finally, a new sidewalk will connect the high school and elementary school. The sidewalk will feature a raised crosswalk with pedestrian warning lights between the schools.

The school district received six bids for the classroom addition. Swofford Construction of Austell, GA submitted the low bid valued at $6,506,000. Construction should begin before year end. The contract completion date is February 2023.
