Henry County Schools will once again host graduation ceremonies at Atlanta Motor Speedway in 2022. The school board approved a contract extension with the speedway on September 13, 2021. The extension provides for graduation ceremonies in May 2022.

Henry County first collaborated with Atlanta Motor Speedway to host high school graduations in 2020 following the COVID-19 outbreak. The school district continued to partner with the speedway in 2021. Graduating seniors in 2022 will represent the third year of ceremonies at AMS.

Graduation dates will be May 18–28, 2022. The ten days allow each high school to host an evening time ceremony, like in 2021. The district will share dates and times later for specific schools.

The rental of the speedway will cost Henry County Schools $147,036. This amounts to $14,703.60 per school. District general funds pay for the venue rental. The contract includes the following:

  • use of the facility,
  • parking,
  • traffic direction,
  • medical services, and
  • radios for communication.

In addition, the use of Atlanta Motor Speedway allows graduates to have unlimited tickets. The traditional use of high school stadiums limits each graduate to 8–12 tickets for family and friends.

Board members thanked staff for bringing the item before them. Pam Nutt remarked ”thank you so much for doing this… This allows family members to attend multiple ceremonies if they have nieces or nephews.” Board chair Holly Cobb followed by thanking Atlanta Motor Speedway for their partnership in hosting the event.

The original contract for 2021 ceremonies included the option for two mutually agreed upon extensions of one year each. The district and speedway will have one option remaining — to provide for 2023 ceremonies — if they so choose.
