In today’s Henry Minutes, I provide updates on the district two recreation center, improvements to Mickie D. Cochran Park and upgrades to the Village Park splash pad. Henry Minutes is a collection of news from around Henry County.

District II Recreation Center

Henry County commissioners met on Wednesday, June 2. During the meeting, board members approved the architect to design a new recreation center in district two. The project is funded through SPLOST V.

The county awarded the design contract to Southern A&E, LLC in the amount of $300,000. The new recreation center will be located at North Mt. Carmel Park.

According to the project RFP, the future building will be 32,000 square feet. It’s expected to include the following:

  • an entrance lobby with check-in area,
  • large community room (approx. 2,400 sq ft) with adjacent catering kitchen,
  • meeting room (approx. 700 sq ft),
  • office / cubical area,
  • employee break room,
  • four multipurpose rooms, each roughly 860 sq ft:
    • fitness / aerobics,
    • technology/ gaming,
    • arts / crafts, and
    • computer lab;
  • public restrooms / lockers (no showers),
  • two (2) separate full-sized basketball courts with room for bleachers and player’s benches, with
  • two (2) main basketball goals and four (4) cross basketball goals for each court.

The building will include an upper mezzanine level with a large open space for fitness equipment (about 3,500 sq ft). The upper level will also feature an elevated walking track over both gymnasiums. The building will include an elevator between the two stories.

A project timeline is not presently available.

Mickie D. Cochran Park

Henry County has a groundbreaking ceremony scheduled at Mickie D. Cochran Park. The neighborhood park in Stockbridge consists of 12.4 acres. The ceremony will take place on Wednesday, June 16, starting at 2 pm.

The county is planning a renovation of the park. They are undertaking the improvements in stages. SPLOST V collections are funding the project.

Previously, the county sought an architect for the project. Instead, they opted to develop concepts only. The concepts did not require board approval because the county manager can approve items less than $50k.

Village Park Splash Pad

Finally, the board approved new safety flooring for the splash pad at Village Park. The item passed during the June 2 meeting.

Henry County will purchase new safety flooring materials to cover the existing splash pad from Life Floor of Minneapolis, MN. The materials cost $46,855. Inside Edge of Eagan, MN will install the new flooring for $41,024.82. Both items will utilize capital project funding.

The flooring addresses a slip hazard and will allow the county to resume use of the splash pad following installation. Village Park is located off Fairview Road in district V.
