Three candidates qualified in the district III election to succeed Commissioner Gary Barham. Henry County held the qualifying period between May 10 to 12, 2021.
The special election will occur on Tuesday, June 15. Early voting starts on May 24 in McDonough. All candidates appear on one ballot because it’s a special election.
A runoff election (if needed) will happen on Tuesday, July 13. The winner will serve until December 31, 2022.
Meet the Candidates
The three candidates include the following:

Greg Cannon
Charles “Greg†Cannon (R) is the co-owner of Cannon Cleveland Funeral Directors in McDonough. He previously served as county coroner for five years. Greg presently serves as interim commissioner following his appointment in April.

Briana Clay
Briana Clay of McDonough qualified on May 11 as a member of the Democratic Party. Additional info about her candidacy was not available at press time.
Sarita Dyer
Sarita Dyer (D) is a retired combat veteran serving nearly three decades in the US Army. She retired as a Sergeant Major — the highest enlisted rank — and served in four combat zones. Dyer serves on the District III Henry County Democratic Committee and on her community HOA board.

District III
Commission district III includes parts of McDonough, Ola and Union Grove. In general, the boundaries include the following:
- I-75 to the west,
- Jodeco Road followed by East Lake Road and SR 20 to the north,
- the Henry / Newton County line to the west, and
- state route 81 to the south.
The district includes neighborhoods along Willow Lane and Oak Grove Road, and SR 42 between McDonough First UMC and Jodeco Road. It also includes SR 155 between downtown McDonough and Salem Baptist Church. The Lake Dow community is in district three. Finally, Ola and Union Grove High Schools are in the district.
