In today’s Henry Minutes, I cover updates on three intersection improvements. Henry County recently posted bid packages for two projects. Georgia DOT also awarded construction for a roundabout. Henry Minutes is a collection of news from around Henry County.

SR 155 at Greenwood Industrial

Henry County is now accepting bids on construction at state route 155 and Greenwood Industrial. The project plans to add a traffic signal. SPLOST V funds in district two are funding the work.

Bids are due from qualified vendors by Wednesday, May 5, at 3 pm. The BOC should consider awarding a contract in either late May or early June. The chosen contractor will have 180 days to complete the project.

Henry County awarded a design contract to Kimley-Horn in October 2020. Kimley-Horn completed the design plans in March. The project is able to move into construction quickly because Georgia DOT previously completed a traffic study at the location. All intersection improvements on state highways require the state’s approval beforehand.

SR 20 at Turner Church Road

In addition, Henry County is accepting bids to build a roundabout at state route 20 and Turner Church Road. Bids are also due on May 5.

Nearby residents advocated for improvements following the re-alignment of Turner Church Road in 2019. The location saw an increase in the number of accidents after the re-alignment. A four-way stop was installed as a temporary measure. Later, GDOT installed the present-day traffic signal. Both were in preparation for the roundabout project.

Funds for the project were included in SPLOST V. Georgia DOT also contributed $500,000 towards build costs.

SR 155 at Panola Road

Finally, Georgia DOT awarded the construction bid for a local roundabout on Friday, April 16. The project is at the intersection of SR 155 and Panola Road.

CMES, Inc. of Norcross, GA submitted the low bid of $2,996,719.30. The estimated completion date is May 31, 2022.

Though more expensive than other roundabouts, the project includes lane improvements in the immediate vicinity. Construction will extend the existing five-lane cross section further south along SR 155. When complete, it will start at Panola Road.

The roundabout will also support two left-hand turning lanes from Panola Road to SR 155 northbound.
