Georgia DOT has awarded a bid to construct improvements at a major intersection in Jonesboro. The project will upgrade the existing traffic signal and add new turn lanes at US Highway 19 / 41 and state route 138.

Bids for the project were received on April 17 and a construction contract was awarded on May 1. The low bidder was Knight & Associates, Inc. of Atlanta, GA in the amount of $2,939,920.50. The estimated project completion date is November 30, 2021.

The project description is as follows:

The proposed operational improvement project would consist of improvements at the intersection of US 19 / US 41 / Tara Blvd and SR 138. This project proposes to widen SR 138 eastbound and westbound to accommodate dual-left turns and exclusive right-turn lanes with a concrete median from US 19 / 41 to Gross Road Pkwy. This project will remove the split phase signal and convert to standard signal phasing.

When complete, the level of service (or measurement of delay) at the intersection is expected to improve from LOS F (the lowest grade) to an E in the AM peak hour. Preliminary engineering for the project started in 2014.

In nearby projects, a widening along US 19 / 41 is under construction south of Jonesboro between SR 54 and Tara Road. The project is widening the highway from four lanes to six. The estimated completion date is May 22, 2022.

This month, Georgia DOT also awarded a bid to install raised pavement markers on ten miles of Interstate 75 in Henry County.
